Countdown to the Finish Line

This week for my

Operation Author:
365 Actions to Becoming a Successful Author

...project I have dedicated much of my time to writing. The couple of actions I've completed were:

First Action:

Scheduled plenty of tweets up to the New Year so I don't have to think about it over the Christmas break.

Follow me here:

https://twitter.com/TomCatDesigns

Second Action:

I have plenty of stock of The Bronze Box and Solomon's Secrets at home and posted images on Facebook for anyone looking for last minute present ideas.

Third Action:

I've done some more dodgy artwork.

I get quite a few followers on Pinterest, especially my 'Writing' board.

As an experiment, I've doodled an image for Pinterest to encourage people to connect with me on Facebook too.

Speaking of Facebook, my Fourth Action was to schedule some regular tweets to try to reach 100 likes on my Facebook author page.

I've picked up a few, but if you'd like to keep up to date with my adventures in writing, come over and say hello to me on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/AmyCFitzjohn

We're down to the last 10 days of the year and the end of this project. I'm cheating slightly, this is what I'm going to do next and I'll update you again in January with my progress.

Here's my plan for a 10 day countdown to 2015

Ten

Plan my 10 remaining actions (Check!)

Nine

Complete the chapter I am working on for Gabriel's Game

Eight

Put together some content for my next 365 project

Seven

I have 6 more chapters to complete for Gabriel's game. Finish one of them

Six

It's Christmas Day! I've some business and writing books on my present list - Let's hope I get some of them.

I'll fit in some writing if I can, but I suspect I'll be eating and drinking and being merry

Five

I'm hosting family but should be able to fit in some writing at the end of the day after they leave. Finish a chapter

Four

I'm hosting more family but have a plan for a treasure hunt to entertain my niece and nephew which involves some creative clue writing - I'll make my last minute preparations before they arrive

Three

Finish the last of the chapters

Two

It's my birthday! I'm going to London but one thing I want to do is visit the British Museum and I'll be using it as an opportunity to do some research ready for my re-writes

One

Do some last tweaks, structural changes and write any extra passages needed to connect the first draft up

Zero

Happy New Year! Now my next 365 Project starts and so do the re-writes and edits.

(Is it weird that as I wrote this countdown I had the theme to Thunderbirds in my head?)

And here's a final dodgy doodle for you:

Seeking bookaholics looking for a freebie....

This week my seven actions for...

Operation Author: 365 Actions to Becoming A Successful Author

...are dealing with the fall out of releasing Solomon's Secrets...

My first action was to shout about it all over social media.

I've scheduled in lots of updates etc.

I'm conscious that I don't want to be one of those people who just tries to sells everyone their stuff on Twitter so I've scheduled in announcements in intervals with other content in amongst my usual tips and content sharing.

There's an 80/20 rule with Social Media:

80% is sharing content
20% is promotion

My next action is to offer the eBook for free to anyone willing to review it.

Calling all bookaholics - Would you like a free eBook in exchange for a review?

If you're looking for something new to read and would like to help an indie author out, email me: amy@tomcatdesigns.co.uk

This offer expires 31st October 2014 - so hurry!

My third action has been to follow up all of the people who pledged to the crowdfund and send out book and eBooks. I set my husband the mission of converting the books into an eBook format that I could email out to people. He had a battle with it but got there in the end.

Getting in touch with them all individually and responding to them is taking a lot of time this week - Can I count that as a few actions? I've not had time to do much else this week!

...why not...

My last few actions this week have been to; post a student placement vacancy on Missionly.

Their site was down at the time of writing this so I can't share the link to my advert, but here's the general one: www.missionly.co.uk

Fingers crossed there is a student in the Bristol area looking for a Publicist Placement who'd be up for helping me out - I could do with an extra pair of hands!

An action that came out of the Books Are My Bag event with Southville Writers and Bristol Women writers is that I've started working on a guest blog on for an online Bristol Lifestyle blog. If it gets accepted I'll share it with you.

Another action is that I have been editing the short story 'I met someone'.

It's a conversation between the heroine of my books, Sasha Blake, and her grief counsellor, Lucy. It's set in 2004 and picks up from the scene in The Bronze Box where Sasha first meets Tom Sheridan in a seemingly chance encounter at The British Museum. They have a brief affair, before going their separate ways and not meeting again until 2013.

A follow up action is to take it to our Southville Writers critique group this week and get some feedback from the others.

When I'm happy with it I'll post it here.

I've just counted back...result... that's seven actions - I've done more than I thought this week!

What marketing actions have you got planned for this week?

Solomon's Secrets: Chapter 11

This week, my seven actions for
Operation Author: 365 Actions to Becoming a Successful Author
I am continuing to serialize chapters from Solomon's Secrets.
I recommend that you read the previous few posts to get up to speed with the story so far.

Enjoy, and please leave comments. Thanks

The British Museum, London

“The Silk Road, eh? Not your usual archaeological diversion.”

“Oh, hello. You startled me, I was miles away.”

“Dreaming of distant deserts and discoveries?”

“Something like that.” Sasha turned to Jon and smiled. “How was your business in France?”

A blackness fluttered across his eyes, he blinked and looked away before painting on a smile.

He did that a lot. She found herself wondering what was going on behind his icy blue eyes, and was it something she should be worried about?

The last time a rich business man had financed her work she saw her first dead body, killed a man in self-defence and was chased through Amsterdam by an assassin. So far, her dealings with Jon Solomon had been rather more civilized. Fancy dinners, foot massages and friendly banter. But for how long?

“Why stop here when there is so much more in this museum?” asked Jon, looking over her shoulder at the fragments of an ancient Chinese parchment, suspended between two slices of Perspex, a specimen in a lab.

She turned and folded her arms loosely.

“You know. I’ve worked on and off at this place for years now. Dipping in and out of different projects. I remember the first time I came here, as a child.”

She slowly walked the length of the illuminated glass display cases, and Jon joined her. She was half looking in at the remains of history and turning occasionally to look at him.

“Is that why you decided to be an Archaeologist?”

“Partly. I remember walking in, seeing the burial offerings from Sutton Hoo and looking up at my dad and saying wow. As he took me around I kept tugging at his sleeve and pointing things out. It was the first time I felt it.”

“Felt what?”

“That tingle. That delicious moment of discovery. I guess it’s a surge of adrenaline. Whenever I come here I try to feel it again. But it’s different every time. Each time I unearth something. The first time is always the most memorable.”

She chuckled to herself and he was smiling at the innuendo.

“It’s easy to get boxed into a subject, to be consumed by the minutia of work. I like to drift around these galleries, looking at things I normally steam past on my way to somewhere else and just remind myself how much there is still out there we know nothing about. So much waiting to be discovered.”

“But why this gallery? Why the sudden fascination with the expeditions of Sir Marc Aurel Stein?”

She stopped and turned to him, “Because of you.”

“Why me?”

“Silk. It’s your obsession. Surely you’ve travelled up and down the Silk Road in the course of your business?”

“Many times,” his eyes lit up.

She had pressed a button, found something.

“Of course, it’s rather more civilised than in the early twentieth century. In Stein’s day it was camels and tents and months in the saddle. These days it’s air conditioned four by fours and helicopters. Still, the area has changed little in thousands of years. These specimens were retrieved from the Cave of a Thousand Buddhas near the oasis of Dunhuang. But I guess you already know that.”

She nodded slowly and smiled.

“I can’t shake the sense there is a connection.”

“A connection? What do you mean?”

She paused, looked around the gallery, “You know what. Let’s take a seat and I’ll tell you.”

“Tell me what?”

She slid onto a polished wooden bench along the spine of the gallery and Jon perched beside her, his knees turned into hers.

“I was looking through old microfiches of The Times newspaper in the library this morning. I started looking for something else for the research we’re working on but it occurred to me to take the opportunity to look for reports of ancient Greek manuscripts. I ended up wasting a lot of time, and just as I was about to give up, I came across some of the reports and columns Stein wrote following his expeditions along the Silk Road. There was a mention of a manuscript written in Greek. It was a passing reference, nothing more but it made me question it.”

“Could it be? Do you think…Could it have been in the Dunhuang library cave?” the colour had drained from Jon’s face.

“Perhaps? It’s certainly worth further investigation. It would be out of place and worthy of note so it’s odd there’s no other mention of it.”

“Some sort of cover up perhaps? Or maybe it went missing? Or never made it back England?” his face was pinched in thought.

“Any of those things could have happened. You’re right though. It’s odd there’s no other mention of such a manuscript? Perhaps it did go missing? While I’m here I may as well make the most of my access to the old records. I’ll do some digging and see if I can find any reference to it.”

“You really are a remarkable woman Sasha Blake. Allow me to buy you lunch!”

“That’s very kind of you, thank you.”

He stood, and offered her his arm, trying to wear a serious face which quickly wore off when she took his arm and allowed him to lead her out of the gallery and into the sunlight.
