Seven Tips to Publicise Your Book - A Guest Blog

I'm delighted to host a guest on the blog this week.

I met Angela Belassie at a netwroking event in Bristol and she was full of so many great tips and ideas for small businsses, and writers, to get some quality PR.

Angela set up PR The Write Way to do just that, and I'm proud to share just a small example of her knoweldge and tips to help authors get their books noticed.

Over to Angela...

Seven Tips to Publicise Your Book.

So, you’ve written your book and are now set to have it published. Congratulations!

You will probably want to shout about it from the rooftops - letting as many people as possible know how and where they can get a copy.

One way to do this is with some good old-fashioned PR; this can include sharing a press release with various press publications, including in print, online and broadcast.

Here are seven tips to write a successful press release to promote your book.

Timing

It is ideal to plan in advance and have the press release ready prior to publication. Bear in mind some publications are monthly – or even quarterly – and it would help to send the press release to them ahead of time. Be aware of the various publications’ deadlines.

Tell Your Story (not that of the book!)

The press is generally more interested in people than products. Focus on the inspiration behind the book, rather than a chapter-by-chapter account.

For example, Inge Dowden wrote The Happy Worker and talked about the adversity she had overcome, which had led her to want to help others.

Inge thought the press wanted to know about the content of the book, but I helped her see that they are more interested in the personal story.

Similarly, Yvonne Bignall drew from her life experience when she released ‘Suck it Up or Change.’

Use Statistics

Statistics can add weight to your article. Finding research which backs up the findings behind your book may help with its promotion.

In another press release, Inge uses statistics to show that most people quit their jobs in January – but this may not be the way forward. Instead, her book gives some options.

Share Your Credentials

How are you qualified to talk about the subject matter in your book? Talk about the experience you have in the field and any relevant qualifications.

Inge has worked for multi million pound corporations both in the UK and abroad.  Over the last 10 years she has helped hundreds of clients make career changes, create profitable businesses and achieve a good work/life balance.

Yvonne is an award-winning personal development educator and life motivator for both lifestyle and business.

Do not be afraid to promote your skillset.

Share Your Success to Date

Consider any successes you have had which you could share in your press release.
For example, Yvonne’s book was a number 1 best seller on Amazon. This adds credibility and encourages more people to buy the book.

If it is prior to the book being released, then you could look at successful case studies.

Reviews

In today’s busy newsrooms it is unlikely that reporters will have the time to read and review your book. Instead ask your network to write reviews and share the positive feedback in your press release and on social media.

Cast the Net Wide

Target a range of publications which are relevant for you. If you live in Bristol, for example, target publications in that area. Also consider community publications and trade press which is relevant to your industry.

Angela Belassie has enjoyed a successful career in the media industry for more than 10 years – as both a journalist and PR consultant. She set up PR The Write Way to help small to medium sized businesses get widespread coverage. http://www.prthewriteway.co.uk/

Building a Book Trailer - Part 2

Back in August, I shared my progress and ideas to create a book trailer for the Sheridan and Blake books. Read part 1 HERE.

Stage one involved regular meetings, my filmmaker familiarising herself with the books and between us building the concept and laying the foundations. I set about collecting cuttings, images, quotes, maps and articles to build the investigation web, as featured in the Bronze Box .

"On one wall were pictures and maps with pins in them, linked with string in a web of investigation that looked as if it had been consuming him."

I've mocked up elements from the web, which will form the basis of the trailer concept and posted a few of them on my @AmyCFitzjohn Instagram.

Since then, Roslyn (my film Producer/Director) has finished reading all the books and has pulled out the quotes, scenes, and images that sum up the story well for the trailer. She has started to storyboard it all and build a plan on a spreadsheet.

At our last meeting, I had the giddy thrill of being able to 'see' what she was thinking and could feel the excitement mounting. We aim to start the filming in November and I've been location scouting this week.

For Tom's office at The Agency, I've found a great space that we could hire for the day and effectively turn it into a film studio, at Filwood Green Business Park.

I'll keep you posted on our progress!

18 Marketing Actions to Sell More Books

At the start of every month I set myself three goals to achieve. Every month the first goal on my list is:

Sell more books

The vision for my business is to be able to live and work anywhere - that elusive location independence.

My long-term plan is to make enough passive income from selling fiction novels, non fiction books, business support services and other digital information products; but it takes time, even as a relatively prolific writer having published four novels in three years.

I'm trying to develop a habit of doing at least one marketing activity towards this goal every day.

I'm keeping a journal, and each day I make a note of the one action I've completed.

I'm sharing the activities completed in June, to inspire you with your own business, and also because sharing it means I'm accountable...

I started the journal part way through June and so far I have 18 activities on the list:

  1. Published a short story blog HERE
  2. Left a mini manuscript at the Watershed
  3. Left a manuscript in Long Long Ashton
  4. Left a manuscript in Boston Tea Party in Horfield
  5. Went to a free writing club
  6. Updated my Amazon sales tracking
  7. Started writing a blogging book
  8. Updated my Amy C Fitzjohn Amazon Author Page
  9. Created an Amy Morse Amazon Author Page
  10. Shared my author pages on Facebook
  11. Started Amy's Book VIP Facebook Group
  12. Updating the VIP group weekly
  13. Scheduled Tweets regularly about my books etc.
  14. Put a call out for guest bloggers (If you'd like to be my guest, Tweet me: @AmyMorse_Writer)
  15. Wrote two guest blogs, 1 has been published: '5 Ways to Unravel Your Story'
  16. Organised an interview with Radio Bristol - I'm on the Richard Lewis show on Wednesday 13th just after 12 noon - you don't have to be in the UK, you can listen online here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/radiobristol
  17. I'm in talks with Radio Oxford about an interview - waiting for them to get back to me with a date
Number 18 is the most exciting one...

I'm working with a film maker to create a book trailer for The Sheridan and Blake Adventure Series!

We've met a couple of times and Ros (who is trying to break into freelance film making, and I'm always keen to support a start up) has got some great ideas. So far, Ros is working up a story board and reading the books and I've put a call out for an actor to play Tom Sheridan and have a few guys lined up, and I've already got a friend of mine to play the part of Sasha Blake!

We're all excited about the project, I'll keep you posted on our progress!

What marketing activities worked for you last month?
