Seven Tips to Publicise Your Book - A Guest Blog

I'm delighted to host a guest on the blog this week.

I met Angela Belassie at a netwroking event in Bristol and she was full of so many great tips and ideas for small businsses, and writers, to get some quality PR.

Angela set up PR The Write Way to do just that, and I'm proud to share just a small example of her knoweldge and tips to help authors get their books noticed.

Over to Angela...

Seven Tips to Publicise Your Book.

So, you’ve written your book and are now set to have it published. Congratulations!

You will probably want to shout about it from the rooftops - letting as many people as possible know how and where they can get a copy.

One way to do this is with some good old-fashioned PR; this can include sharing a press release with various press publications, including in print, online and broadcast.

Here are seven tips to write a successful press release to promote your book.

Timing

It is ideal to plan in advance and have the press release ready prior to publication. Bear in mind some publications are monthly – or even quarterly – and it would help to send the press release to them ahead of time. Be aware of the various publications’ deadlines.

Tell Your Story (not that of the book!)

The press is generally more interested in people than products. Focus on the inspiration behind the book, rather than a chapter-by-chapter account.

For example, Inge Dowden wrote The Happy Worker and talked about the adversity she had overcome, which had led her to want to help others.

Inge thought the press wanted to know about the content of the book, but I helped her see that they are more interested in the personal story.

Similarly, Yvonne Bignall drew from her life experience when she released ‘Suck it Up or Change.’

Use Statistics

Statistics can add weight to your article. Finding research which backs up the findings behind your book may help with its promotion.

In another press release, Inge uses statistics to show that most people quit their jobs in January – but this may not be the way forward. Instead, her book gives some options.

Share Your Credentials

How are you qualified to talk about the subject matter in your book? Talk about the experience you have in the field and any relevant qualifications.

Inge has worked for multi million pound corporations both in the UK and abroad.  Over the last 10 years she has helped hundreds of clients make career changes, create profitable businesses and achieve a good work/life balance.

Yvonne is an award-winning personal development educator and life motivator for both lifestyle and business.

Do not be afraid to promote your skillset.

Share Your Success to Date

Consider any successes you have had which you could share in your press release.
For example, Yvonne’s book was a number 1 best seller on Amazon. This adds credibility and encourages more people to buy the book.

If it is prior to the book being released, then you could look at successful case studies.

Reviews

In today’s busy newsrooms it is unlikely that reporters will have the time to read and review your book. Instead ask your network to write reviews and share the positive feedback in your press release and on social media.

Cast the Net Wide

Target a range of publications which are relevant for you. If you live in Bristol, for example, target publications in that area. Also consider community publications and trade press which is relevant to your industry.

Angela Belassie has enjoyed a successful career in the media industry for more than 10 years – as both a journalist and PR consultant. She set up PR The Write Way to help small to medium sized businesses get widespread coverage. http://www.prthewriteway.co.uk/

Lucky 13, an appeal for help and a call for guest posts...

This week for

Operation Author: 365 Actions to Becoming a Successful Author

My 7 tasks have revolved around working towards getting Solomon's Secrets published.

My first action was to meet with Silverwood Books about publishing the book through them. I have some thinking to do then get back to them with what I would like.

I saw some examples of the books they've published and had a long chat over a cup of tea. I'd really like to work with them but everything depends on the success of the crowdfund.

My next action was to put an update on Fundsurfer, briefing those who've already pledged and providing more information to those that haven't, in the hope that it will resonate and they'd like to support me.

Link to the update here
My next action is an appeal for help...

If you've been enjoying the updates. If you've read some of the extracts and think that this a project worth supporting, please get involved.

Of course, if you ever need help spreading a message I'll help you out too if you've helped me :)

There are several ways you could help:

Twitter

Follow me on Twitter and I’ll follow you back:

Facebook
Pinterest

Follow and share the Pinterest boards on the book:
Here’s the board of actors I imagine as my characters:

Here’s the board of research links that I sourced when writing the book:

My next action is to call for guest posts.

Have you got an idea for a post on marketing tips for creatives / writers?

I'm looking for short pieces of approximately 500 words. Share your tips and experiences here.

Tweet me if you are interested:

This action is a funny example of how small the world is.

I sent a press release to the Wellington Weekly News

They printed the piece. Later, on Facebook, a friend in New Zealand who's mum had sent them a copy of the Welly Weekly to mark the birth of their son (they too grew up in Wellington Somerset), posted an image. It was the issue I was in...

The next action associated with this is that my old school, Court Fields Community School contacted me and asked me to be the key note speaker at their awards ceremony. I'll be talking to pupils at my former school about following your dreams, entrepreneurship and writing on 10th July.

And finally, I'm still serializing chapters of Solomon's Secrets from time to time and this week I posted chapter 13

Please get in touch if you'd like to guest post and help support my publishing ambitions.  Thanks

Keys, scrolls, cheesy videos and crowdfunding

My seven actions this week for

Operation Author: 365 Actions to Becoming a Successful Author

have largely been about keeping up the momentum for the crowdfund pitch.

https://www.fundsurfer.com/project/independently-publishing-solomons-secrets-event

I've finished the edits for The Bronze Box now too. The second edition is the edition I will be offering through the crowdfund, having corrected mistakes that slipped through the in first edition, added a new Epilogue and updated the cover. Thanks to my very talented brother Lewis: https://twitter.com/MrLewisFitzjohn,  for contributing the artwork for the cover.

  • I met with Olly and Derek from Fundsurfer this week and went over my marketing plan with them.

  • I also had a 1 to 1 with a business adviser from a new enterprise support agency in Bristol.

  • I've created some leaflets and had an idea about rolling them into a scroll so they look like a treasure map

The first batch of keys that I made up with labels on them have now all gone out to various places across Bristol and I went into a key cutting shop in Bedminster and got another handful of keys from his reject box in exchange for a donation to the charity pot. These key labels are different to the first batch and are just for the crowdfund

  • I've posted an out take video on You Tube that was cut from my crowdfund pitch but it's worth a watch if you're curious about my stories:

Watch my video here:

What do you think?

Is there anything here that inspires you?

It's alive! The beast lives!

My Operation Author: 365 Actions to Succeed as an Author this week has all been about my crowdfunding pitch.

By talking the time to put together a good pitch and offer some attractive rewards, and by choosing a local start up, I am maximising the chances of getting some widespread publicity for Solomon's Secrets.

The fund was launched this week...

It's ALIVE!

Here it is: https://www.fundsurfer.com/project/independently-publishing-solomons-secrets-event

Take a look and tell me what you think (and have a giggle at my cheesy video).

My seven actions have been related to publicising and launching the crowdfund and have included;

  • I was the speaker at the Fundsurfer launch party on Thursday night. I'm a confident public speaker and find that I have most impact when I get in front of people - my challenge is to find ways to do this
  • I did some networking at an event at The Greenway Community Centre on Friday and met a couple of really useful contacts. One who edits a couple of local magazines so I'm going to meet with him for a coffee to discuss writing some content for them.
  • Putting together a marketing plan for the crowdfund. I'll be meeting the guys at Fundsurfer next week to go through it and pick their brains
  • Sending out lots of emails to my network with links to the crowdfund
  • My Klout score went up, I spent so much time on twitter spreading the word and responding to people
  • I've written an article on my experience of crowdfunding. It will go in the next issue of Prowess Women in Business. I currently have an article in there about the power of telling stories to attract customers - http://www.prowess.org.uk/stories-about-your-business

Have you ever tried crowdfunding?

If so, what worked for you?
